Arbitration in Hamburg
As an old merchant city, Hamburg has a long and rich history of international trade and arbitration. It is home to almost a dozen arbitral institutions of general and specialised jurisdiction.
Hamburg International Arbitration Center (HIAC)
With the Hamburg International Arbitration Center (HIAC), Hamburg moreover features a central point of contact for all matters related to arbitration in Hamburg. The HIAC offers also a location for events and opportunities for dialogues on arbitration, a contact person for specific questions on the conduct of arbitration proceedings in Hamburg and the possibility of renting meeting rooms for arbitration hearings.
The HIAC is located at the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce and hosts various institutions which administer arbitrations, including the Court of Arbitration of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce, the Chinese European Arbitration Centre (CEAC), the European-Latinamerican Arbitration Center (ELArb) the Logistics Court of Arbitration, and the Arbitration Board of the German Coffee Association. It is also the appointing authority for ad hoc arbitrations pursuant to the Hamburg Friendly Arbitration.
In addition, courts of arbitration of the German Grain Traders Association (VdG) and of the German Association of Wholesale Traders in oils, fats and oil resources e. V. (GROFOR) are located here. The Hamburg Chamber of Commerce is also well connected to the other arbitration institutions in Hamburg, such as the German Maritime Arbitration Association (GMAA).
Thus, Hamburg offers entrepreneurs unique possibilities for resolving their conflicts with national and international business partners.
The HIAC was created based on the joint initiative of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce and the association Rechtsstandort Hamburg e.V. which promotes Hamburg as a centre for law. Additionally, the website www.dispute-resolution-hamburg.com, an initiative by the association Rechtsstandort Hamburg e.V., lists arbitrators and provides easy access to practical information relating to conducting arbitrations in Hamburg.

- Court of Arbitration of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce Hamburg's Chamber of Commerce is the center of arbitration in Hamburg. It founded one of the first courts of arbitration at the end of the 19th century: The "Schiedsgericht der Handelskammer Hamburg" has been responsible for disputes arising out of commercial contracts since then.

- Meeting rooms for arbitration hearings The Hamburg Chamber of Commerce is located in the city centre next to the town hall. Apart from the churches, it is perhaps Hamburg’s most beautiful building. The Chamber of Commerce offers interested companies, business and professional associations an outstanding venue for large functions, meetings, presentations, AGMs and specialist conferences, with two big meeting halls and seven conference rooms.
