Why is there a statutory membership requirement for the Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK)? Lawmakers decided in favour of obligatory membership so that the IHK could represent the overall interests of all commercial enterprises in a region. If IHK membership was voluntary, then the composition of its membership would be the result of coincidence.

The chambers of industry and commerce (IHK) charge membership fees. The sum is determined every year by the annual general meeting in the budget statutes – in exemple by the elected representatives of all members.

The DIHK is the central organisation for 80 Chambers of Commerce and Industry in Germany.

All round the globe in more than 90 countries, 130 Chambers of Commerce (Auslandshandelskammern "AHKs") with more than 1.400 employees look after companies which are interested in bilateral economic activities with Germany. These institutions form a unique, performance-oriented, locally experienced and globally present servicing network – the largest of its kind in the world.
