Learning German

Do you want to learn German
to be well-prepared for life and work in Germany?

Learning German is very important

If you're planning to live and work in Germany, learning German is very important — realistically, it can make or break your experience there. While it’s possible to get by with English in some specific situations, especially in international tech companies or startups in cities like Berlin, Munich, or Frankfurt, the majority of jobs in Germany still require at least a basic to intermediate level of German. Sectors such as healthcare, education, public service, customer-facing roles, and skilled trades almost always expect you to speak German, often at a B1 or B2 level.

Daily life in Germany often requires some German

But it’s not just about employment. Daily life in Germany — going to the doctor, renting an apartment, dealing with government paperwork, or simply shopping — often requires some German. Even in cities with large international communities, things like visa applications, tax documents, and health insurance are typically only in German. And socially, speaking the language makes it much easier to make local friends, understand cultural norms, and feel at home.

You don’t need to be fluent on day one

That said, you don’t need to be fluent on day one. If you start with some basics and work steadily toward an intermediate level (B1) within your first year, you'll find that living in Germany becomes far more manageable and enjoyable. Speaking German shows respect for the local culture, increases your job opportunities, and gives you more independence in everyday life.
